Samsung Galaxy S10 review: is it still relevant?

2019 – actually it wasn’t that long ago, but it seems a lot longer. Do you feel the same? For example, the iPhone 11 was launched in 2019, wait what, that was just yesterday? I felt the same way when I decided to take a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy S10 .

It is well known that Samsung launches a highlight every other year when it comes to innovation and in 2019 it was that time again: the world was looking forward to Las Vegas for the Samsung Showcase. And yes, you can say that Samsung did not disappoint us, as we found out in the Galaxy S10 review: Bixby, in-display fingerprint sensor and triple camera are just a few examples that we will go into more detail later.

In addition to the Galaxy S10, the S10e and the S10 Plus also saw the light of day at the same time . Are you curious which model in the Samsung Galaxy S10 comparison has the edge? Then take a look at our comparison, in which we took a close look at all models.

The nice thing about working at Back Market is being able to observe the rapid price drop of the devices up close. Because usually six months after publication you will find many cheap offers for used smartphones on Back Market. This also applies to the Galaxy S10, which you can now buy for around 360 euros, which is 60% cheaper than the original price.

The advantages and disadvantages at a glance:

We have summarized the most important information in the Galaxy S10 test for you here.

Strengths:

  • modern aesthetic
  • increased performance
  • superior image quality

Samsung, as always, leads the way with the design

The 10th generation of the Samsung Galaxy S range was released on March 8th, 2019 and the least we can say is that the device performs beautifully alongside its biggest competitors. In fact, aesthetics have always been the main strength of the Korean electronics and mobile giant’s devices: the Samsung Galaxy S10 impresses with its sleek lines and rounded edges.

The screen takes up almost the entire front of the device and even extends to the sides (keyword Infinity Display). This increases the compactness of the device and the design is also very user-friendly in terms of handling: With dimensions of 14.99 x 7.04 x 0.78 cm and a weight of only 157 grams , the S10 fits easily in one hand. With the Galaxy S10 colors you can choose between Prism Black, Prism Blue, Prism Green, Red, Blue, Prism White and White.

The front camera has therefore been moved from the top center to the top right corner to at least push the annoying limitation of the display out of the center of the field of view. This is exactly what was done with the successor S20, take a look at our mobile phone comparison Galaxy S10 vs S20 here .

What are the special features of the Galaxy S10?

Improved performance

We found that out in the Samsung Galaxy S10 review: The smartphone works with a Samsung Exynos 9820 triple-core SoC processor, which is supported by 8 GB of RAM. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy S9 to the Exynos 9810 processor, this device has reduced power consumption with significantly higher performance. However, the smartphone tends to get a bit warm as soon as you push it for higher performance. But it must also be said that we subjected the device to extreme conditions of use: playing video games to excess, taking photos and videos for extremely long periods of time.

Excellent display quality

We’ll say it over and over again (you’re probably tired of it already), the Galaxy S10’s screen is a true innovation. On the one hand through the design with the curved edges, but also and above all through the reproduction of the images: the Amoled QHD panel offers an optimal viewing experience. Not forgetting the ideal brightness (520 cd/m² in standard lighting mode) and the very remarkable contrast. You can conveniently use your smartphone from anywhere, especially in broad daylight under strong sunlight.

The Galaxy S10 camera

When it comes to photos and videos, you can’t help but emphasize the quality. There’s plenty of that with a 3-sensor main camera including a 12MP wide-angle, 12MP telephoto with 2x zoom and a 16MP ultra-wide sensor . The quality of the shots taken in daylight is above standard even with backlight. Details are also emphasized in artificial light and/or indoors. Even images in dark surroundings are characterized by high sharpness and real dynamics.

Videos are recorded in 4k, which is the ultimate in terms of visual representation. The automatic image stabilization system greatly increases the quality of the shots taken with the Galaxy S10. The results are similar to scenes shot with a gimball stabilizer.

A smartphone for entertainment fans

Lovers of various videos and films cannot find anything better. In particular, the S10 is compatible with the HDR10+ system and offers an excellent visual experience. Of course, you’ll need to look at content available in this format to get a sense of the actual quality of the device’s images.

The sound quality is good, but nothing more. The user can choose between several connectivity solutions, namely USB-C, Bluetooth and jack if he wants to use an audio device. That’s right! The Samsung Galaxy S10 keeps the (old) 3.5 mm jack plug. From our point of view, this is a real advantage. We’re not going to get into a heated debate on the subject, but in our opinion, Apple hasn’t done well in removing this element from these devices, particularly Apple’s X range.

Why is the Galaxy S10 a phone for lazy people?

You tend to be one of the lazier people and love to take shortcuts? Then you are exactly right here 🙂

Bye Alexa, hello Bixby

The Android 9.0 Pie operating system and the One UI 1.1 surface ensure outstanding comfort and smooth navigation. In addition, the famous Bixby routines are revolutionizing the daily use of the smartphone. This application takes care of the automatic execution of certain tasks. In particular, the software offers the possibility of activating various tasks (blue light filter, screen brightness adjustment, battery saver mode, night mode, ringer volume, etc.) according to precise data (time, place, a specific activity) during an incoming or outgoing call, when connecting devices , etc. to configure. Bixby also offers intuitive task suggestions based on user habits.Wow, I can finally say goodbye to Alexa!

The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor

In addition to the basic unlocking modes (password, PIN code), Samsung strengthens the security of the device with facial recognition and the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor integrated under the screen glass. This is actually the very first smartphone model with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. But we have to admit, the equipment is still in need of improvement. Samsung was obviously in a rush to release the device and lead the race without taking the time to refine the technology. During our tests, we noticed that the fingerprint sensor is not fully functional. It is sometimes necessary to replace the finger several times before unlocking the screen.

Which is better, the S9 or the S10?

A big step forward has been made between the Galaxy S10 vs Galaxy S9 , but if you can find a good deal on the Galaxy S9 and are on a tight budget, grab it! Any Samsung flagship released in the last 3 years is still an excellent choice.

How does the Note 10 compare to the S10?

The Galaxy Note 10 vs Galaxy S10 are very similar phones, but the Note 10 gives you a slightly larger display and better battery life, while the Galaxy S10 comes with the added benefit of a headphone jack. Oh, and don’t forget you also get an S Pen in the Note 10! The S Pen might not be a game changer, but it’s a nice feature and really handy if you like taking notes on the go or need a remote shutter release for your camera.

Will the Galaxy S10 price fall even further?

The S10’s price has already dropped by more than half, making it perhaps the perfect time to buy a refurbished S10. This phone is still getting Android OS updates, which makes it feel no different than Samsung’s latest releases.

Where can I buy the Galaxy S10 cheap ? Well, of course refurbished at Best Black Fridays!

Now what is the answer here: to buy or not to buy?

The test for the Galaxy S10 is still very positive even after two years. The performance is right, the camera is great and even the small features that make it special are far from outdated. If you cannot or do not want to raise the budget to buy the Galaxy S20 or the Note 10, you will be really satisfied with the S10 . We already mentioned it above, but if you buy a used Samsung Galaxy S10, you get a 36-month guarantee and the opportunity to test the device for 30 days on top of that. Good luck with your decision!
